Winter Skin

For most of us, our winter skin feels and looks less vibrant than in the warmer months. There is a multitude of factors that contribute to this. We often have much less exposure to the sun (hello, Vitamin D) as well as spend much more time indoors where we are affected by the drying effects of central heating or wood-burning fireplaces. Here are a few tips to support your skin during these drying times.

  • Put a humidifier in your room. Humidifiers are inexpensive and are extremely useful in putting moisture back into your air. If you have an essential oil diffuser, you can use that with or without the essential oils.

  • If you have a wood-burning fireplace, be sure to put water on the stove to diffuse into the air.

  • Change your pillowcase regularly. It's just a good skin practice as we shed dead skin, sweat, and hair product onto our cases as we sleep. I also highly suggest investing in a quality pillow and organic pillowcase.

  • Cut down on your time in the shower, as well as the temperature. Hot showers may feel good at the time, but they are extremely drying.

  • Try switching your cleanser and moisturizer. Some cleansers and moisturizers are best for certain seasons. In the winter, I encourage clients to cleanse with an oil cleanser and finish with a balm. A balm is a waterless moisturizer. The oil cleansing and balm application are richer and longer-lasting offerings for your skin during the dry months.

  • Eat warming foods. Be mindful of the temperature of your fluids. It is not the season to be drinking smoothies or ice-cold beverages. Save your raw veggies for the warmer months too.

  • Massage your scalp. Scalp massage is not only an incredibly relaxing experience, and it alleviates a tremendous amount of tension from your neck up. Facial massage and scalp massage alike will get you GLOWING.

  • Get a facial! A holistic facial is an incredible way to gently and effectively slough off the dead skin buildup. There is nothing like it to revive a sluggish face.

That's all for now. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any comments or questions. I am here to support you and your skin.
